The River's Edge

This is one of several of James Clover's monumental sculputres that uses abstract shapes to create a story about their setting. In this piece, The River's Edge, Clover uses fish and bird-like shapes to reflect on the wildlife you might naturally find in a river scene like this one. The sculpture is best viewed while walking in a circle around it so you can see the many ways in which the shapes playfully interact with one another. 

Some Facts

• While Clover was an art teacher at Grand Valley State University, his work can be found on college campuses all across the country.
• The artist, originally hailing from Oskaloosa, Iowa currently resides here in Grand Rapids.
