Steel Water

When the historic Monroe Avenue Filtration Plant on Grand Rapids' northside began adding fluoride to its water in 1945, the city became the first in the world to fluoridate its water. This sculpture, Steel Water, by Amsterdam-based British sculptor Cyril Lixenberg, commemorates that occassion.

Some Facts

• This sculpture is actually the second in Grand Rapids to commerate Grand Rapids' distinction as first in fluoride. The previous, which was replaced by Steel Water in 2007, is currently in storage until a suitable new home can be found.
• Both sculptures were sponsored by the West Michigan District Dental Society.
• At 33', Steel Water is one of the tallest sculptures in the city
